"Revue" [in] The Dial, Volume LXXIII, Number 1 (July 1922)
Greenwich, CT: Dial Publishing Company, 1922. Original, single octavo issue. Printed thick-paper wrappers; pp. viii,[1]-120,ix-xvi. Square and tight, with mild external soil and minute chips at spine ends; text remains bright, unmarked, and supple; Very Good.
An important single issue of what was arguably the most influential little magazine of the early 20th century. Wallace Stevens' "Revue" – actually a grouping of six poems that would later be collected separately, including "Bantams in Pine-Woods," "The Ordinary Women," "Frogs Eat Butterflies. Snakes Eat Frogs. Hogs Eat Snakes. Men Eat Hogs."; "A High-Toned Old Christian Woman"; "O, Florida, Venereal Soil"; and "The Emperor of Ice Cream." All six (relieved of their catch-all group title) were included in Stevens' monumental first collection, Harmonium, published by Knopf in 1923. There are several other contributions here of similar value: Mina Loy's "Apology for Genius"; D.H. Lawrence's "The Fox"; Ivan Bunin's "Kasimir Stanislavovitch"; also reproductions of artworks by Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Boardman Robinson, etc.
