An Evening Contemplation in A College; Being a parody on the Elegy in A Country Church-Yard, By another Gentleman of Cambridge
London: R. & J. Dodlsey in Pall Mall, 1753. First Edition. Quarto. 23cm. Functional buff card wraps. 12pp. Clean and sharp; internally clean, large margins, some very light soiling in places. A very good, bright copy.
A popular (and rather swift) parody by a witty clergyman and poet, of the incredibly popular "Elegy in A Country Church Yard" by Gray. The fact that the parody itself was well known and appreciated is presumably testament to how widespread appreciation of Gray's original must have been, as Duncombe's work was issued a mere two years after Gray and settled into an already fairly well travelled groove of publications.
