Expertly rebacked, preserving entirety of original spine; title page slightly darkened else very fresh internally, complete and virtually free of foxing. A highly attractive copy in a very early binding.

The final installment in Locke's ongoing contretemps with Bishop Stillingfleet, which was launched with Stillingfleet's Discourse in Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity (1696), in which he accused Locke of denying the mysteries of Christianity and promulgating a Materialist philosophy. Lockes first Reply to the Bishop came in 1797; it was answered, producing a second Reply – and then, yet another Answer, with Locke getting in the last word with the current Reply, not long after which Stillingfleet died. As it were, a philosophical coup de gras; a consequential text, and a useful explication, in Locke's own words, of his epistemological system. PFORZHEIMER 608. ESTC R32483.
