A posthumously-published work by the Parliamentarian, freethinker, and self-styled philosopher Henry St. John, Lord Bolingbroke (1678-1751). The translator is unidentified. Though not published until after Bolingbroke's death, this rumination upon the origins of humans' instinct for compassion almost certainly dates from Bolingbroke's residence in Paris in the 1720s, when he was first formulating his rationalist conception of man's universe.
