Virginia: T.W. White, 1828. First American Edition. Twelvemo. 17.5cm. Contemporary full speckled tan sheep with a black leather title label. [xvi]; 17-192pp. [pagination continues uninterrupted from the roman introduction). Light rubbing and scuffing to the corners, a little rubbing to the hinges but strong and solid, boards a touch bowed, strong and handsome; internally lightly foxed and spotted throughout, front flyleaf with tears to gutter, frontispiece of horse skeleton, old ink ownership to title page, some small predation along the lower edge of the page block, shallow and not interfering with text, small blue ink stain to the upper margin of p.70. A solid, stubborn little copy of a scarce book, complete and eminently usable, handsome even, with some cosmetically unflattering wear.

One of those indispensable little pocket ready references that every artisanal profession used to accumulate, this time dealing with all of the possible malaises and harmful conditions that horses, working or otherwise are prone to, with remedies and advice. Whilst many of the older European pocket references had useful information, most of the remedies were herbal or otherwise organically prepared, and the expansion of the US required that it produce its own pocket guides taking into account native plants and remedies, and solutions that had been developed and discovered specifically in this "new" environment.
