Georgia Scenes, Characters, Incidents, &c. in the First Half Century of the Republic. By a Native Georgian

Augusta: Printed at the Sentinel Office, 1835. First Edition. First printing. 12mo. Publisher's plain linen-backed boards; printed spine label; iv,[5]-235pp. Boards spotted, with slight edgewear; vertical cracks to spine, but holding; spine label rubbed and mostly illegible. Internally complete and clean, with mild and scattered foxing. Later (19th-c.) holograph ex-libris of a Philip La Tourette, undated. A sound, Good or better copy. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell case.

The rare first appearance of a book that has been widely credited with establishing the "local color" genre of American regional literature; as Streeter notes, a landmark work and an important precursor to the work of Samuel Clemens. A second edition with illustrations appeared in New York in 1840, but this Augusta printing is both charmingly rustic and extremely elusive, appearing at auction only three times this century, only once in the publisher's binding. BAL 12946. SABIN 41936. HOWES L-448. STREETER SALE II:1168.

Price: $6,000.00
