Resist the Draft / Anti-War Day
[New York: NY CARD, 1969]. Offset lithograph in colors, 43cm x 29cm (17" x 11"). Signed in image, lower right. Crease to left corner, with a single short, closed tear; Very Good+. Unbacked.
A fiery photomontage poster advertising a rally that appears never to have taken place, perhaps because it was scheduled for the same day as the ticker-tape parade celebrating the safe return of the Apollo Eleven astronauts. An interesting composition, somewhat out of character for Averill, most of whose graphic works emphasized her considerable drafting skills. Peg Averill (1949-1993) was a prominent and prolific East Coast artist/activist, known especially for her pacifist and anti-incarceration activism. She founded the Washington, D.C. graphic arts collective "Art For The People" in the early seventies and was an illustrator for Rolling Stone and Liberation News Service among others. This poster quite uncommon.
