Light scuffing and rubbing to corners, and spine ends without any structural harm, strong and solid; internally clean, frontis. woodcut of Martin Luther, uniformly lightly toned, some mild waterstaining to lower edge of prelims, some spotting and offsetting, and a little expected thumbing and wear; robust and eminently readable. A very good copy in a tight, simple yet handsome binding.

A collection of hymns assembled by the patriarch of the first Lutheran Church body founded in Pennsylvania, and indeed the entire United States. Muhlenburg was born in Einbeck in 1711, and emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania in answer to a request for spiritual ledership from Lutheran emigrés. In 1748 he founded the Pennsylvania Ministerium, the first fully established and permanent Lutheran synod in America. He continued to preach and teach to European immigants all over the country until his death in 1787, although his influence upon the early development of the church endured long after his passing.
