Polish Letters. Translated from the unpublished manuscript
[Boston]: The Bibliophile Society, 1905. First, Limited Edition. One of 445 copies. Two large octavo volumes (24cm). Publisher's parchment over boards, titled in gilt on spines; fore- and bottom edges untrimmed; 224,213pp; illus; printed on Italian mold-made paper. Bindings slightly toned with age, somewhat darker on spines; faint foxing to prelims and tissue-guards, but the text remains fresh and clean, mostly unopened. Far better than is typically seen, as the Bibliophile Society publications were notoriously prone to foxing.
The first translation into English of Marat's Lettres Polonaises, a satirical epistolary novel that was never published in the author's lifetime. Though uncredited in the publication, the translation and substantial biographical introduction are by the Boston author and translator Nathan Haskell Dole (1852-1935).
