Publisher's printed and decorated card wraps, printed in black and brown. 344pp.; 416pp. Tight and handsome, some soiling to the pale cream wraps, a little wear to extremities; internally clean and fresh, unopened, inscribed by the author to the front flyleaf of volume I. A very good, neat inscribed set.

Grousset was Director of the Cernuschi Museum in Paris after a long stint running the Musee Guimet, and was widely acclaimed as a reliable authority on what would have then been called Asiatic and Oriental Studies. The inscription, translated, reads:
"To Monsieur McEwan, in testimony of respectful gratitude and admiration, Rene Grousset"
The volumes originated in the library of Nathaniel Tarn, noted translator, poet, and anthropologist.
