Matrix II
Yelm, WA: Leading Edge Research Group, 1991. Stated Third Edition. Quarto. 28cm. Original velobind closures with clear acetate covers. [xv]; 459pp. Clean, strong and tight with some toning of the clear acetate, and with the rear cover having some creasing and wear to the lower front corner; internally clean and fresh. A very good copy of a rather oddly produced work.
The second mammoth respository of UFO, Paranormal, and Conspiracy Theory related data collected, digested and interpreted by "Valdamar Valerian", the pen name of UFO writer, self proclaimed ex-intelligence operative, and explorer into the obscured and concealed; John Grace. Part of a lifelong exploration into UFO and associated cover-ups, conspiracies, sightings etc. that began in the early 70's when Grace was a combat photographer in South East Asia, then finally crystallized in the 1980's when he produced (or at least is presumed to have produced) The Krll Papers, a large data dump of UFO conspiracy material that morphed into Matrix I in the early 90's, carried along by a newsletter issued by his Nevada Aerial Research Group, which later similarly transformed into the Leading Edge Research Group which issued several gigantic instalments of Matrix, all rare, all elusive, all roughly the size of an RV, and just as easy to digest.
The information rather haphazardly collected in the Matrix papers meanders wildly between fascinating, thought provoking, unlikely, and downright unfeasible with lengthy stops at all points in between.
There is no denying however the anarchic, exploratory drive and energy behind them, the central message of questioning and distrusting authority in all its forms until proven and researched, and the understanding that if you don't dig, that won't necessarily stop you from getting buried. Of particular interest is the way in which UFO and paranormal/alternative research highlights tangible issues through the lens of the intangible; Matrix II contains a whole sequence suggesting that the AIDS/HIV epidemic was in fact of alien origin, and the reason the US government was doing nothing about it was because then they would have to admit to knowledge of aliens in order to do so; "So we just sit back and die at their leisure?", to which the answer is a simple "Yes." which was an undeniably factual response regardless of how it was arrived at. UFO and paranormal research is by definition anti-establishment seeking after truth, and thus should be considered a viable arm of counter culture and alternative modes of thought development, but one whose territories should not be travelled lightly. Scarce and fascinating.
