Vail (1866-1924) was a Unitarian minister, a Christian Socialist, and an organizing force behind the Social Democratic Party of America in 1900. He was hugely popular as an orator, know for his gift – on display in the current work – for articulating the principles of Socialism to working-class audiences. This title, issued by Vail's own "Comrade Co-Operative Press," is uncommon.
