Text in French and Japanese. Soiled to the wraps, with some wear and chipping at the spine ends and a triangle of loss to the upper fore-edge of the front cover, solid; internally clean with some soiling to the margin of the half title, inscribed by the author on half title, with several pages of notes in Japanese laid in at the rear. A strong, complete copy with some soiling and wear.
Inscribed on the half title:
"A Sir Charles Eliot, en temoignage de gratitude, Sylvain Levi, Aout 1927"
Sir Charles Elliot was a Royal Navy officer, colonial administrator and diplomat, who had at the time of the inscription just relinquished the post of British Ambassador to Japan after a distinguished career. From the library of Nathaniel Tarn, noted poet, linguist, and anthropologist, with his Japanese translation notes laid in at the rear. A nice association copy with some soiling and wear.
