Deluxe binding of full pebble-grained morocco over beveled boards, bound in Japanese style with silk cord; all edges gilt; 184pp; illus. A pretty copy, with minimal rubbing to the fragile leather binding at spine ends and board corners; small loss to silk endcap at base of spine; faintly foxed to endpapers, but otherwise very fresh and clean. A Very Good to Near Fine copy.

A lavishly-produced, posthumous edition of Longfellow's long narrative poem on the life of Michelangelo. Extensively illustrated with relief engravings by various artists including Thomas Hovenden, F.D. Millet, Walter Shirlaw, S.L. Smith and others. The poem was included in the Houghton edition of Longfellow's Collected Works a year earlier, and there were three British copyright editions of about thirty copies each (never commercially distributed) in 1883. Blanck does not note the number of copies issued in leather, but it must have been small, as we have seen only one other copy in the deluxe binding. BAL 12250.
