Publisher's gilt-decorated green cloth; 524pp. A tight, sound copy, mildly rubbed at board corners but gilt remains bright on spine and front cover; internally fresh and complete with mild foxing to endpapers and prelims – solidly Very Good. Preceded by the London edition in three volumes (1868). SHABERMAN 36, providing the 1876 date without source; note however, that Richard I. Johnson's Checklist of MacDonald's American editions supplies a date of 1870 (see North Wind: Journal of George MacDonald Studies, v.39). Yet, the publisher's address on title page (of this copy, as well as all others we have examined) is given as "Corner Bromfield and Washington Streets, Boston," suggesting a post-1871 publication date.
