Gree cloth hardcovers; [1]-464; [465]-892pp; frontispiece and 32 unnumbered leaves of plates; two maps (one folding) at end of text. A sound, Very Good set with some sun-fading to spines and slight chipping to cloth at head and heel. The sheets are those of the British first impression, but this appears to be a ca. 1932 reissue, dating from the period of the brief merger between Robert O. Ballou and Jonathan Cape.
A major early work by Fischer (1896-1970), an American journalist and Soviet sympathizer, who was once accused by Trotsky of being a "direct literary agent of Stalin." Later, Fischer would turn his back on Communism, devoting most of the second half of his life to anti-Soviet commentary.
