[Item #86594] The Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff. Mathilde BLIND, Trans., Marie BASHKIRTSEFF.

The Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff

London: Cassell & Company Limited, 1891. First Thus. Single Volume Edition. Octavo. 20cm. Later black buckram titled in gilt to spine. 694pp. Strong and solid, sunned to spine panel fading the black bag to a dark brown, some scuffing and soiling to boards with some light scratches to the surface of the cloth; internally clean, signs of label removal to pastedown, old ink ownership to verso flyleaf, some light occasional foxing and spotting, and some occasional pencil emphasis to parts of the text. A good solid copy in a later, possibly institutional binding.

A single volume edition (the first edition of 1890 was produced in two volumes), of the runaway bestseller detailing the life of the Ukraine born artist, now best known for her painting "The Umbrella" but at the time a cause celebre due to the unfortunate combination of her luminous skill as a painter, and her tragic early death in Paris at the age of 25.
