Attractive reissue of this early book of verse by Spanish poet and playwright Miguel Hernández Gilabert (1910-1942), originally published in tiny numbers in 1936 under the title El Rayo Que No Cesa. Hernández was involved in both the Generation of '27 and Generation of '36 movements, and a member of the Communist Party of Spain who served in the Fifth Regiment during the Spanish Civil War. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his anti-fascist sympathies, where he would write his poetry on pieces of scrap toilet paper. He contracted tuberculosis while in prison and died in 1942. His early books are known in very few numbers, in commerce or in institutions. This reissue was part of the Argentine publisher's "Biblioteca Contemporánea" series, with this being an uncharacteristically clean and well-preserved copy. While not marked as such, it comes from the library of noted poet, translator, and anthropologist Nathaniel Tarn (1928-2024). 85939.
