Mission Pavie Indo-Chine 1879-1895. Géographie et Voyages III: Voyages Au Laos et Chez les Sauvages du Sud-Est de L'Indo-Chine
Paris: Ernest Leroux, 1900. First Editions. Single volume (of eleven). Quarto (28cm x 24cm). Contemporary dyed calf over marbled boards, titled and ruled in gilt on spines; 428pp; photo frontispiece (portrait); fifteen maps (some double-page); photographic text illustrations (halftones). Mild external wear; crown of spine lightly pulled; a bit of foxing to preliminary leaves; still a very nicely-preserved volume, easily Very Good.
The fifth volume (by chronology) of Pavie's celebrated account of multiple expeditions, beginning in 1879, into previously unsurveyed regions of Indochina including Thailand (then Siam), Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The work (collectively known as "Mission Pavie"), eventually ran to ten volumes, published over more than a decade spanning the years 1894 to 1919. The current volume, assembled by Pavie's cartographer Pierre-Paul Cupet, provides a detailed itinerary of travels in Laos and is especially valuable for its detailed maps as well as accounts of indigenous communities including the Bahnar, Djiarai, and Sedang peoples.
