Contemporary dyed calf over marbled boards, titled and ruled in gilt on spines; v.I: xlvi,367pp; errata leaf; color frontispiece map + 19 leaves of color plates; v.II: xlv,449pp; map in colors + 70 separately-numbered leaves of b/w plates (inscriptions). Mild external wear and a bit of foxing to preliminary leaves; still a very nicely-preserved pair of volumes, easily Very Good.

The first two volumes of Pavie's justly celebrated account of his multiple expeditions, beginning in 1879, into previously unsurveyed regions of Indochina including Thailand (then Siam), Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. The work eventually ran to ten volumes, published over more than a decade spanning the years 1894 to 1919. The current volumes focus on the literature and social history of Cambodia, Laos and Siam and include multiple extracts in the original Pali, Khmer, and Lao scripts. Volume II includes numerous facsimiles of inscriptions from Lao and Thai chronicles.
