Dustjacket. 368pp. Very light scuffing and bumping to the cloth, mainly confined to the spine ends, a little soiling in places; internally clean with a lengthy inscription from the author to Garland Quarles on the front flyleaf, and an additional laid in 2pp. handwritten letter on Glass armorial notepaper, several in text corrections, and the addition of the drop title by hand to the front panel of the dustjacket, and the title page; in a bright, strong dustjacket with some sunning and fading to the spine panel, minor soiling, and some shallow chipping and fraying to the edges. A very good copy with an extremely interesting Virginia association.

A tremendous association between two of early twentieth century Virginia's most dedicated and prolific educators; Katherine Glass Greene, aside from being a prominent member of Virginia sociaety, built and ran the Fort Loudoun Seminary for two decades. The FLS was considered a ground breaking educational establishment for the time, and during Greene's administration graduated 137 women into society with qualifications they would have been otherwise been obstructed from achieving and allowing them access to opportunities they would have been denied. That the well being and future success and stability of her charges was a primary priority in the career of Katherine Glass Greene cannot be denied, although the contemporary religious preoccupations are perhaps less favorably viewed today. That she should know, admire and correspond with Garland Redd Quarles is entirely unsurprising given his history as one of Virginia's longest standing and most successful educational superintendents. Quarles began his teaching career in 1923, and by the time of his retirement from teaching in 1962 he had been instrumental in just about every meaningful development in Virginia educational systems, and was a highly regarded and admired member of the Winchester and Shenandoah Valley extended communities.

Katherine Glass Greene's accompanying letter sympathizes with Quarles' intense schedule, and asks that after the "XVIIIth Festival has entered the Hall of Fame..." and Quarles has some time, perhaps he might care to examine her book.
