The Scarlet Empire
Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1906. First Edition. Octavo. Red cloth boards, blocked in black and gilt on spine and front cover; 400pp; 10 inserted leaves of plates by Hermann C. Wall. Gentle overall wear, with the spine showing a touch of sunning with spine gilt slightly dulled; slight soil to text block edges, and a contemporary cartoon tipped-on to verso of rear endpaper. Still a bright, sound copy, easily VG.
A socialist dystopia with Atlantean setting. The author was President of the very conservative National Association of Manufacturers, so perhaps may be forgiven his jaundiced take on social progress. NEGLEY 891. SARGENT p.138. LEWIS p.143.
