Thick octavo (23cm); brown cloth titled in gilt on spine, with the author's facsimile signature stamped in gilt within a double blind-ruled border on front cover; floral patterned endpapers; xii,[2],[13],14-670,[2]pp, with portrait frontispiece and 16 plates of illustrations. A clipped signature of Henry Ward Beecher has been mounted to front endpaper by a previous owner. Light wear to spine ends and extremities, faint foxing to text edges, with more pronounced foxing to a few preliminary leaves and the frontispiece; hinges sound; Very Good+ or better.

First printing of this substantial tribute volume to Beecher (1813-1887). The first and third parts are biographical and dedicated to his speeches and statements on various subjects, though the most substantial portion is dedicated to reminiscences from his contemporaries. It contains, among many others, the first appearance of a 2pp tribute by Frederick Douglass, telling of their meeting, and urging people to remember Beecher for his good deeds (at the time of his death, Beecher was not completely out from under the cloud of the adultery scandal he was embroiled in).
