Mexico: Seven Photographs [Direct Mail Art]

Brooklyn: Institute of Contemporary American Arts, 1985. Single sheet, 22" x 17"; folded to make a mailer of 5-1/2" x 8-1/2". Title printed on outside panel, with bar code for postage. Opens to show seven photographic illustrations. A few faint creases at margins; folds as issued; Near Fine.

A highly ephemeral piece of mail art by the noted African American photographer Dawoud Bey; produced under the auspices of the equally ephemeral Institute of Contemporary American Arts, a Brooklyn-based arts organization that appears to have existed for only one year. We find no evidence that any other artists participated in the "Direct Mail Art" project. An extremely early appearance in print by Bey, preceded (as far as we can tell) only by a single contribution to the Brooklyn periodical "Word!" in 1980. Not recorded in OCLC.

Price: $450.00
