Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party Newsletter - Vol.II, No.8 (June 22, 1968)

Sunflower, MS: MFDP, 1968. First Edition. Tabloid bifolium (57.5cm); original newsprint wrappers; 4pp; illus. Two old folds, trivial wear to extremities, else Near Fine.

Late issue of the official publishing organ of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP), established in 1964 to challenge discrimination based on race in the electoral process, and formed out of the collaborative efforts of the NAACP, SNCC, and CORE. The MFDP challenged the legitimacy of the regular Mississippi Democratic Party (MDP), which allowed participation by whites only, despite African Americans making up 40% of the state's population. The present issue was published a few months prior to the MFDP joining a coalition of other Mississippi groups to offer a slate of Loyal Democrats of Mississippi, who were seated as the official delegates to the 1968 National Convention in place of the conservative white delegation. Contents discuss the coalition to challenge the state Democratic Party, a brief memorialization of Robert F. Kennedy, a list of ongoing issues in the various congressional districts, coverage of the SCLC's Poor People's Campaign, extensive coverage of issues facing Black schools in Mississippi, Langston Hughes's poem "Mississippi (Words For A Plastic Sax)," and an article on food stamp issues and the welfare crisis within the state. Uncommon in commerce; OCLC notes 10 locations holding any issues.
