[Item #80731] Mr. Hot Rod. Charles VERNE.

Mr. Hot Rod

New York: Key Publishing Co, 1957. First Edition. 8vo. 21cm x 14.5cm. Publisher's grey cloth boards. Dustjacket. Titled in red to spine, some very light shelfwear, strong and handsome, in a bright organge pictorial dustjacket with some marginal creasing and a couple of short cosed tears, and some soiling to the white rear panel. A very good, suitably dramatic copy indeed. 183pp. Internally clean, which is something to be said regarding a book that is normally read to a smoking standstill. "Mr. Hot Rod" has literally everything that one could possibly desire from a pulpy, gnarly, over-revved, unashamedly horny, unashamedly queer bit of American Auto-Guignol. There's a car obsessed gang called The Fender-Benders (!), there's jealousies and jalopies, and sapphic harpies seeking forbidden love with "the Third Sex", there's a dizzying selection of insatiable women with driver fetishes, striptease artists with the carnival, "bra models" willing to help our hot rod hero reach the finish line, all played out against a backdrop of rival racers, and a positively Borgia-esque web of thirsty machinations. There is nothing to be said about this flame-job of a book that doesn't make it more and more strange and desirable.
