"The City Shadow" [in] The Nautilus. Magazine of New Thought. Five contiguous issues, 1909-1910

Holyoke, MA: Elizabeth Towne, 1909-1910. Five quarto issues in original staple bound, pictorial paper wrappers; 80 - 96pp per issues; many advertisements, nearly all in the vein of physical and mental hygiene and health reform. All Very Good or better, retaining the original wrappers, clean and firmly bound. A contiguous but not consecutive run, comprising the following issues: Vol. XI, no. 11 (Sept 1909); Vol.XII, nos. 1 (Nov. 1909); 3 (Jan 1910); 4 (Feb 1910); 6 (Apr 1910).

A representative collection of early issues from this long-running journal of the New Thought Movement, edited by Elizabeth Towne. Publication began in 1898 and continued, under Towne's sole editorship, until 1953. Contributors include the standard roster of New Thought writers, including Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Thomas Dreier, Mary Stedman Harpel, Edwin Markham, Wallace Wattles, Swami Vyavananda, and numerous others. Of special interest for the issues assembled here is the appearance of Sinclair Lewis's novella "The City Shadow," which was introduced in the September, 1909 issue and serialized in ten parts from October 1909 to May 1910, preceding his first published book by some two years. Four of the ten parts are included here. A difficult periodical to obtain in any condition, especially early issues; this is an unexpectecly fresh and supple assemblage.
