Boston: Houghton Mifflin, (1914). First Separate Edition. First printing. Narrow octavo; printed laid-paper over boards; 38pp; frontispiece and 3 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates (halftones). Near fine in the original boards, lacking the dustwrapper. Early gift inscription to front endpaper, to a Jack Peacock from "Mrs. Bancroft," datemarked "Long's Peak Inn / August 11, 1926." A nice copy.
First separate printing of Mills' celebrated essay, which had originally appeared in his second book, "Wild Life On the Rockies," in 1909. Mills conducted a detailed post-mortem on the "Old Pine," an ancient yellow pine in the southern Rockies within the boundaries of what is now Mesa Verde National Park, telling its history through a detailed study of its rings.
