The Return to Iwo Jima 1945 to 1985. The Journal of Lucian Caste, February, 1985

N.p. [Salinas, CA?]: Privately Printed, (1985). First, Limited Edition. One of twenty copies, hand-numbered on colophon, hand bound by Ellen Owings. Quarter-cloth over printed paper-covered boards; 56pp. Fine. Inscribed on verso of title page: "Dad / for all you and Mother did for me / Lucian," undated.

Caste (d.2013) was a well-known Pittsburgh-area architect and a survivor of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This is his travel diary kept during his 1984 return to Iwo Jima as part of a week-long Marine Corps commemoration for veterans of the battle. A fascinating document, including a vivid first-person account of the D-Day landing and its aftermath. It is unclear whether the inscription is that of the author of his grandson (and namesake), to whom the diary is dedicated. This printing of twenty copies apparently comprised the entire edition.
