Kesten's sixth novel, originally published in exile (Amsterdam: Allert de Lange) in 1936. Kesten lived in various cities, including Paris, New York, and Rome after fleeing Berlin in 1933. The current translation is uncredited; a London edition, translated by Edwin Crankshaw, appeared in 1937 under the title "Spanish Fire."
