Too Good Looking

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1936. First Edition. First printing. Blue linen over boards, titles stamped in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 351pp. Mottling to cloth, else tight and straight in the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $2.00 on front flap), very mildly edge-rubbed; Very Good or better.

Attractive copy of this nearly forgotten late novel by the renowned San Francisco humorist and children's author, founding editor of the seminal San Francisco literary magazine The Lark (1895) and author of the Goops books for children. A romance with light criminal elements, set in rural Pennsylvania, Too Good Looking was reviewed positively for the New York Times by Margaret Wallace, who characterized it as "an original and highly diverting tale...[with] plenty of local color, plenty of deftly and amusingly drawn minor portraits of rustic characters, and sub-plots in almost bafflling profusion" (NYT, May 3, 1936).
