[Item #62037] The Port Huron Statement. SDS, Tom HAYDEN, Robert A. Haber.

The Port Huron Statement

New York: Students for a Democratic Society, 1964. Second Printing (but first regularly published edition, following the mimeographed issue of 1962). 20,000 copies printed. 12mo; staple-bound, printed card wrappers; 64pp. Trivial cover soil; still a tight, clean, very Near Fine copy in the original wrappers. Includes an Introductory Note not present in the first printing.

Quite lovely copy of perhaps the most significant and influential American political document of the 1960's. The Port Huron Statement was the first official statement of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), representing "the collective thought of the inspirational founding Convention of SDS, held in Port Huron, Michigan, June 11-15, 1962 (from introductory note to this edition). The document was prepared by staff members Tom Hayden, Robert Haber, and others; it outlined what SDS felt were fundamental problems facing American society, and laid out a radical vision for a better future, and exerted a tremendous influence on the New Left in America in the decades to follow. While this second printing is decidedly more abundant than the uncommon first (mimeographed) edition, it is rare to find a copy so nicely preserved.
