[Item #61182] History of the Reign of George III. King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland [vols I & IV]. Edward BAINES.

History of the Reign of George III. King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland [vols I & IV]

Leeds: Printed by Edward Baines; for Longman, Hurst, and Co.,; and Hurst and Robinson, 1820, 1823. First Edition. First printing. Quarto (27cm). Two volumes bound together in contemporary full calf, sympathetically rebacked with original spine laid down, gilt roll along edges of boards, tooled in gilt and blind on spine, titled on leather spine labels, all edges faintly marbled; marbled endpapers; [ii],506,ii],200pp; stipple frontispiece portrait, two additional portraits. With separate title page for vol. IV, dated 1823. Armorial bookplate of Joseph Foord [sic] Wilson. Nineteenth-century binder's ticket of Allen, Chichester. 1922 ownership inscription and a few penciled notes to front blanks. Sound, mildly edgeworn, with some portions of original leather on spine flaking slightly; mild foxing throughout, occasional mild tidelines to lower margins of some leaves, including plates, but not affecting text or image areas: around Very Good.

The author intended these two volumes to be added to a previous two-volume publication, to form a four-volume set. His History of the Wars of the French Revolution, published in 1817 and covering the period from 1792-1816, would form volumes II and III of the set. Vol. I, published in 1820, covers the beginning of George III's reign from 1760-1792; and vol. IV, published in 1823, covers the end of the reign from 1816 to 1820. However, this intention was not always realised. While completed sets can be found institutionally, the 1817 volumes and the 1820-23 volumes often appear separately in the trade.
