Time [Limited Edition, Signed - Kenward Elmslie's Copy]

New York: 'C' Press, 1965. First Edition. Limited Issue, one of 100 numbered copies signed by both Burroughs and Gysin, this being copy no.68. Slim quarto (28cm); pictorial card wrappers, stapled; [32]pp; illus. While not explicitly marked as such, this copy belonged to American author and publisher Kenward Elmslie (1929-2022), and while not called for, bears the additional signatures of TIME editor Ron Padgett and art director Joe Brainard on the title leaf. Light wear to extremities, gentle sunning to spine-fold, with subtle toning and some trivial dustiness to rear wrapper; contents fresh; Near Fine.

One of the great collaborative works of the 1960s, in which Burroughs created his own version of Time magazine. He altered the cover of the November 30, 1962 issue, featuring Chairman Mao and Jawaharlal Nehru, by collaging over it with a reproduction of a drawing; the text included four drawings by Gysin, and incorporated cut-up texts and various photographs serving as news items. A distinguished copy, from a period where both Burroughs and Elmslie were both contributing regularly to C: A Journal of Poetry. In his RealityStudio blog, Jed Birmingham mentions General Editor Ted Berrigan signing copies "in isolated cases," though this is the only such copy we have seen that is signed by Padgett and Brainard, a gifted draftsman, whose contributions to layout and design were key to the production of this issue.
