Bushnell invented the first submarine to see use in combat: the Turtle, which he had developed while a student at Yale. During the American Revolution, the Turtle unsuccesfully attacked the British HMS Eagle on September 6, 1776. This work is a narrative account of that attack. Bushnell also made equally unsuccessful attacks with floating mines in 1777 and 1778, and was put in command of the new Corps of Sappers and Miners in 1779.
