Drake-Brockman (1875-1952) offers a vivid description of the region now known as The Republic of Somaliland, an autonomous state within the internationally-recognized borders of the Somali Republic. Drake-Brockman's account is especially rich in its descriptions of native flora and fauna; less useful in its descriptions of the native human populace, towards whom he takes an affectionate but literally paternalistic view, describing the Somali as "...a child, [who] like a child will try his tricks on anyone, irrespective of his position or nationality, rendering it necessary to watch him constantly."
