With a lengthy inscription in Wister's hand, in which he recounts the publication history of the text: "Written in 1899 + published in Harper's Magazine - later in the volume "The Jimmyjohn Boss." Published separately ten years later- Owen Wister Mar. 2. 1916." JOHNSON p.547. FPAA IV p.393.
