Octavo (23cm). 13 volumes in original sheep, gilt tooling to spines, titled on brown leather spine labels, all edges marbled; I: viii,616,[viii]pp; II: 600pp; III: 624pp; IV: 624pp; V: 622pp; VI: [608]pp; VII: [600]pp; VIII: 600pp; IX: 612pp; X: 612pp; XI: 612pp; XII: [612]pp; XIII: 540pp. With cancel title pages. Generally sound but rubber, leather peeling in places; endleaves heavily foxed, textblocks with minor scattered foxing; final gathering of vol. III pulled but just holding, large loss to front flyleaf in vol. IX, inkstain at tail of vol. XII: just Very Good.

1842 reissue of a major American encyclopedia, first issued in 1829-33 by Carey, Lea & Carey. "Based on the seventh edition of Brockhaus...[it] was an immediate success. Reprints and revisions appeared in 1835, 1836," and into the 1850s. In 1911, the Encyclopaedia was revived by Scientific American in 1911, and became one of the top three English-language encyclopedias, along with Britannica and Collier's (Collison p.184).
