Crane collaborated on this book with Kate Lyon, who is said to have done much of the research and some of the writing(ANB). The mistress of author Harold Frederic, Lyon socialized with Stephen and Cora Crane when they lived in Surrey at the turn of the century, and Cora supported Lyon when she was charged with manslaughter after Frederic's death. (She was acquitted.)

John Sloan was a member of the Socialist Party from 1910-14, an unsuccessful Socialist candidate for the New York State Assembly, and the art editor of The Masses from 1912-16. This is one of the first books he illustrated in a long career in the art world (ANB). STALLMAN 30. BAL 4094.
