Allgemeine Physiologie des Koerperlilchen Lebens

Leipzig: Weidmann, 1851. First Edition. Octavo. Contemporary paste-paper boards with holograph spine label; viii,636pp. Evidence of spine label removal, and remnants of a card pocket on rear endpaper; bookplate and stamp of Washington & Jefferson College to front pastedown. Text mildly toned, but still supple and unmarked. Complete and good. Text entirely in German (roman type).

Though little read today, Lotze has been called the "single most influential philosopher in Germany, perhaps even the world" of the second half of the 19th century (SEP). Lotze was trained as both a medical doctor and a philosopher, and his work in each realm influenced the other. The current study is an articulation of Lotze's materialist approach to animal physiology, rejecting vitalism in all its forms and applying mechanistic principles to an understanding of both physical and mental activity.
