Octavo; black cloth hardcover, titled in gilt on spine; 39pp. Slight external wear, with spine lettering somewhat dulled; old stain to upper margin of p.17; previous owner's ink pressure-stamps to verso of final leaf. A respectable, VG copy, lacking the dustwrapper.

The somewhat uncommon first printing. The entire printing consisted of 4,165 copies, of which 3,377 were destroyed by the publisher because of a printing error. A second printing was issued later the same year, but those copies do not bear the statement "First American edition" on verso of title page. GALLUP A43a.
