Des Principes de la Guerre. Conférences faites en 1900 a L'École Supérieur de Guerre

Paris: Berger-Levrault, 1917. Octavo. Contempoary quarter leather over marbled boards; 341pp; 25 maps, of which eleven are large folding plates at end of text. Mild to moderate external wear, including some rubbing to leather at joints; typical aging to margins of text; one map slightly frayed at outer margin (not affecting printed area), still a complete and Very Good copy. Text entirely in French.

These lectures, drawing on Foch's intensive study of the Franco-Prussian War, were first delivered during his tenure as a professor at the École Supérieur de Guerre in 1900; they first appeared in book form in 1903. This reprint, published during World War One in a year of Allied setbacks, was possibly timed to support Foch's elevation to a position on the Supreme War Council in November of 1917. Not especially common in any early edition, and a key historical work on the Franco-Prussian War as well as a foundational work of 20th-century military theory.
