Elizabeth Palmer Peabody opened the first English-language kindergarten in the United States, and published numerous influential training materials for kindergarten teachers. Her sister Mary was a teacher, and collaborated with her husband Horace Mann in his highly influential work for the Massachusetts board of education. The publisher, J. W. Schemerhorn specialized in materials for schools; the ads in this copy are for slates, prize medals, furniture, and rewards of merit forms, as well as books.
