[Item #58741] Elementary Principles of Carpentry. Thomas TREDGOLD, John Thomas Hurst.

Elementary Principles of Carpentry

London: E. & F. N. Spon, 1904. Eleventh edition. Stout 12mo (19cm). Dark maroon publisher's cloth, stamped in black and gilt; [viii],527,[5]pp; 48 full-page lithographs at rear. Generally sound, though rear hinge cracked and repaired; with foxing to endleaves, prelims, textblock edges, and occasionally in the gutter: overall Very Good, externally fresh and bright--unusual thus.

Late revision of Tredgold's standard work, first published in 1820, and at that time "...the first serious attempt in England to determine practically and scientifically the data of resistance, rather than relying on formulae calculated in the previous century...though long the standard [textbook] of English engineers, [its] scientific value...was seriously impaired by Tredgold's insufficient mathematical training, and particularly by his ignorance of the theory of elasticity, which often led him into error and rendered his reasoning obscure" [DNB]. Illustrated in-text throughout, with an additional section of forty-eight full-page plates illustrating construction of rooves, domes, partitions, scaffolds, etc. An unusually well-preserved copy of a book usually found well-used.
