A sweeping assessment of "social displacement" among all castes in French society, asserting that unity among the classes will be achieved not through class warfare but through recognition of a national character, to be developed through free education and moral instruction. The book is considered an important transitional work for Michelet, who would embark on his massive History of the French Revolution the next year.
