Deep South Showman: the Story of Eddie Wilson

New York: Carlton Press, 1962. First Edition. First printing. Small, slim octavo (21cm). Cloth hardcover; dustjacket; 33pp. About fine in a slightly rubbed and faded dustwrapper with 1/4" loss at crown of spine, old price sticker affixed (apparently permanently) to front cover; just Very Good.

Scarce author-published biography of Alabama African-American film impresario Eddie Wilson, who beginning in the mid-1920s, toured the deep south with a mobile moving-picture show, bringing films directly into Black communities that otherwise were deprived of access to theaters. "Besides showing motion pictures in schools, churches, public auditoriums, etc., Eddie would supply a running commentary and would interpret what was going on the screen for the benefit of those who had been deprived of education and formal learning..." (from jacket blurb). The Carlton Press was a New York vanity publisher, unrelated to the London-based trade publisher of the same name.

Price: $125.00
