The Labor Defender – Vol.V, No.1 (January, 1930)

New York: International Labor Defense, 1930. First Edition. Slim quarto (30.75cm); original pictorial wrappers, stapled; 20pp; illus. Modest wear, some creases and toning to rear wrapper, and a 3.5" x 3.25" square cut from lower edge of p.9/10; Very Good only.

This fragile and uncommon publication, issued from 1926 to 1937, is perhaps one of the most underappreciated of American radical magazines of the period. In addition to its bold photo-montage covers and pictorial style, the Labor Defender featured some of the finest radical writing of the time and was notable for its direct engagement with contemporary events. Contents include contributions by Ernst Toller ("A Visit to Tom Mooney"), Nicolai Lenin, Louis Engdahl, Sender Garlin, Sol Auerbach, Ella Reeve Bloor, Charlote Todes, Hugo Gellert, Albert Moreau, and others. GOLDWATER 126.
