Scrapbook on Steamships, Sailing, and Travel

[ca 1900]. Folio (37.5cm). Half black cloth, marbled paper over boards; 170pp. Scrapbook with clippings laid down, largely halftones and relief line blocks, with some newspaper clippings. Sound but rubbed at edges, with cloth over spine and corners renewed, pages somewhat brittle: around Very Good.

An early twentieth-century scrapbook largely concerned with ships and travel. The majority of the scrapbook (107pp) collects articles about and images of ships, including contemporary reports, historical articles, photos and dramatized illustrations, and portraits of notable sailors and crews. The bulk of this section deals with steamships, though there are 14pp of images on sailing ships and yachts, including images dated to 1899.

Most of the rest of the album (39pp) is devoted to inhabitants and events of varying countries and regions: Southern Africa (2pp), the America West (3pp), the North Pole (1pp), Japan and China (3), Canada (2), Haiti (1), the Philippines (8), Turkey (2), Egypt (1), and South American (13pp), with an emphasis on the Cuba Ten Years' War with Spain, including a page focused on Major General Máximo Gómez. The rest of the scrapbook (24pp) collects miscellaneous art and illustrations, including two pages on dancers and beauties.
