A strong, clean impression from Kralik's "Werktätige" ("Working") series, an homage to working-class Germans at the outset of the Nazi era. Beginning around the same period, Kralik was named "Agitprop Secretary" of the Düsseldorf branch of the KPD, and turned his efforts to producing antifascist propaganda. In 1934, after being declared a "degenerate artist," Kralik fled to the Soviet Union, where he remained until after the Second World War (see autobiographical essay in 100 Jahre Hanns Kralik; Bonn: Galerei Pentagramm, 2000).
