[Item #57331] The Woman of Mystery [L'Eclat d'Obus]. Maurice LEBLANC.

The Woman of Mystery [L'Eclat d'Obus]

New York: Macaulay, 1916. First American Edition. Octavo (19.5cm). Blue ribbed cloth, titled in gilt on spine and front cover; frontispiece, 352pp. Board corners tapped, still a tight, Near Fine copy in what we assume to be the primary binding of gilt-blocked bookcloth (we have also seen copies bound in cheaper printed loose-weave cloth, which we assume to have been a remainder binding). The translator is unidentified.

Published in French as L'Eclat d'Obus (1916) and in Great Britain as The Shell Shard. A Germanophobic murder mystery set in the opening months of the Great War; this version does not feature Leblanc's famous detective Arsène Lupin, but Lupin was written into the story for a new edition in 1923, presumably to capitalize on the great popularity of the series.
